Nicki Pedersen insists reaching the World Championship's top three remains his target, despite putting himself into title contention by winning the FIM Mitas Czech Speedway Grand Prix in Prague on Saturday. The Danish champion defeated Aussie legend Jason Crump, Polish icon Tomasz Gollob and world champion Greg Hancock in a star-studded final, contested by four men with nine world individual titles between them. This result handed Pedersen 19 points and leaves him fourth in the World Championship on 42. But 20 points for Crump puts him top on 44. Hancock and Gollob are sandwiched between them on 43. After putting three difficult seasons behind, Pedersen's form and determination suggests he has the steel and hunger to lift title No.4. Six of the last eight Prague winners have gone on to claim the World Championship in the same season. But Pedersen isn't getting carried away by his Czech triumph. He said: "I wanted to close the gap. That was my target. To get into the final and win it was even better. That's just a bonus. What I'm fighting for is the top three. If you're in the top three, anything can happen." Asked how confident he feels of winning his first world title since 2008, Pedersen replied: "I'm always confident when things are working, but it's way too early to start talking about that. I'll just focus on the next Grand Prix in Gothenburg." Pedersen has finished 10th in the World Championship for the past two seasons and had become disillusioned with life in the competition as he struggled to get back to his brilliant best. But the Odense-born man has shown he has the stomach for a fight this year. He finished third in Auckland despite a heavy crash which left him with an injured foot and concussion. He also battled his way into the Leszno semi-finals and exited on 10 points. Pedersen has not dropped below double figures in any of his league matches in Poland, Sweden, Denmark and the Czech Republic this season. This run of results is great news for his home fans with the FIM Dansk Metal Danish SGP approaching on June 9 and the rider is delighted to have brought this form on to the SGP stage. The 35-year-old said: "That's what I've been waiting for. I'm over the moon about it. My league form is good and I'm enjoying speedway again. The way my starts have been working in the leagues has been extremely good. To take that into the Grand Prix is a different thing, so that's great. That's working really well and it's something I can continue with. "A lot of different things have changed from last year – the engines, the team, myself, my form and I'm enjoying it again. I feel hungry." Pedersen started off his night with a last place in heat four, but hit back with two second places and two race wins to end his first five rides on 10. He then stormed to victory over Gollob, Chris Holder and Emil Sayfutdinov in the semi, before taking the gold medal. Having had such a shaky start, the two-time FIM Speedway World Cup winner was pleased to turn things around. "I started off with a zero in the first race and that was a huge blow," he said. "My clutch didn't really work. The engine didn't really have the right setup. I changed the bike and changed the setup completely. From there, everything was working. "We were working hard in the pits, but I think everybody was. The track was extremely slick. I'm glad my starts seemed to come back again. The things we did with the clutches and stuff worked great in the last three heats." Pedersen appears to have the confidence in his kit that he has lacked over the past few years. "I've been working with these engines for more than a year and I know what's happening with them," he said. "Whenever I modify things on the bike, I can feel the difference. That's a huge difference because before, I wasn't in harmony with my bikes. It didn't really work for me. I can still get beaten, but now I can also get back on the pace and know what I've done wrong and right." Runner-up Crump's wait for his first Grand Prix win since April 2010 goes on. But he was more than happy to leave the Czech capital leading the World Championship. He said: "I was close to a win, but in the final Nicki just made too good a start for me off gate two. I couldn't get there with him. It has been a good night. I got a fair few points. I got a good total in the heats, won my semi and obviously six points in the final would have been nicer than four, but you can't win them all. I was as surprised as anybody when they told me I was leading the World Championship. That's a bonus." Third-placed Gollob, who won in Prague in 1999 and 2010, added: "I'm very happy with third place. Maybe next year I can win here again, but congratulations to Nicki and Crumpy. I scored some very important points and it will be my night next time in the Grand Prix." Next up is the FIM Swedish SGP in Gothenburg's Ullevi Stadium on May 26. Long Track is often compared to Speedway, but there are a few differences between the two.So what are they?Long-Track tracks are 800 to 1300 metres long and are greylag, sand or grass. There are six riders on the line (versus four for Speedway) and they cover four laps at speeds of more than 120 km/h!Long-Track bikes are built with a two-speed gearbox and rear suspension, and they are bigger than the speedway version. The mechanics are essentially the same, only the settings are different because of the track lengths.Few riders can succeed in the two disciplines: only reigning FIM Long Track World Champion Joonas Kylmakörpi has reached the top in both of them.Text: Lydia RobinPhotos: Ubbo Bandy

Greg Hancock is targeting a spot in the FIM Monster Energy Speedway World Cup Race-Off after...

Greg Hancock is targeting a spot in the FIM Monster Energy Speedway World Cup Race-Off after leading the United States to a famous victory in their qualifying round at Slovenian track Ljubljana on Saturday. The world champion bagged four points as the men in the Stars and Stripes scored 44 points to see off hosts Slovenia, who finished on 40, the Ukraine (24) and Italy (20).The meeting also featured a stunning international comeback for 1996 world champion Billy Hamill after five years out of European racing, and the 41-year-old rolled back the years to collect 10 points.Ricky Wells bagged 11 and Ryan Fisher racked up 10 as the USA booked their spot alongside SWC champions Poland, Denmark and Russia in Event One at Polish circuit Bydgoszcz on July 7.The winners of that meeting earn a spot against hosts Sweden in the SWC Final at Malilla on July 14.They join the top side from Event Two, which will be contested by Team Great Britain, Australia, Germany and the Czech Republic at British venue King's Lynn on July 9.The second and third-placed sides from Bydgoszcz and King's Lynn will go into the Race-Off at Malilla on July 12, where there will be one further SWC Final berth up for grabs. All the sides which reach this stage of the competition are guaranteed a spot in the following year's SWC and Hancock admits avoiding next season's qualifiers is the American dream. He said: "Who knows where we'll go from here? But our goal is to make it to the Race-Off. We've made it to Event One, so we're halfway there."It's definitely not going to be an easy task and we know that. You've got to have goals and you've got to make them achievable."For us, it's going to be very hard, but the Americans are back in the game and, no matter what happens, we're giving it one hell of an effort and the Race-Off is what we're looking at. I'm really excited."This will be the first time the Americans have raced in the SWC proper since they were knocked out in Event Two at Coventry in 2007. So Hancock was over the moon to take one of world speedway's sleeping giants back into the big time.He said: "It's awesome. We did what we wanted to do, and so much came out of it. We anticipated that Ricky and Ryan would step up their game and with Billy coming in, it raised the bar for the whole group."Everybody rose up to it and it was a good feeling; just like the old days. I hope this will help us with the rebirth of American Speedway."Hamill retired from racing in Europe at the end of 2007, but he was determined to do his bit to make the Americans a force in world speedway again.Hancock was over the moon to be reunited with his good friend and admitted he was taken aback by his former SGP rival's hunger. He said: "Maybe I was surprised Billy jumped into it as much as he did, but it was awesome."One thing Billy and I talked about, and maybe he didn't realise this, was how much he was going to raise everybody's game. We all wanted to get more points than he did. He was making a comeback and we've all been in it for a while."It was nothing but good, positive energy and results for us. He deserves a lot of credit for that because he really helped to generate the comeback of the Stars and Stripes."To come back into this kind of competitive racing after such a long lay-off from it was impressive. Of course he was nervous – we all were. But with every race, you could see he got more and more comfortable. He started to relax on the bike even more and I really believe that he started enjoying himself."It was a pleasure to watch and you could see the signs of the Billy Hamill everybody knows coming out again. It was great."It's not yet confirmed that Hamill will be taking his place at Bydgoszcz due to his work commitments in the States. But Hancock hopes his fellow Californian will line-up alongside him in Poland. He said: "I hope Billy is able to make it for the semi-final, but that's just not for sure at this stage. He has a lot going on in the States and whether those commitments will allow him to do it, I don't know."He has got the desire to do it, for sure. But the first step was doing this meeting, which he always said he would. We've made it through and we'll see how things work out."

Holder : Leszno win was ''for Leigh''

Australian hotshot Chris Holder dedicated his FIM Fogo European Speedway Grand Prix win to Leszno...

Australian hotshot Chris Holder dedicated his FIM Fogo European Speedway Grand Prix win to Leszno legend Leigh Adams after winning a dramatic final at the Alfred Smoczyk Stadium on Saturday night. While Polish pair Tomasz Gollob and Jaroslaw Hampel were locked in a titanic battle for the lead, Holder took full advantage to creep up the inside and hit the front. He held on under immense pressure from Gollob on the last corner to top the rostrum ahead of the 2010 world champion and Leszno favourite Hampel. World No.2 Andreas Jonsson picked up fourth place. The Sydneysider's clever burst up the inside brought back memories of his compatriot Adams, who raced at the Alfred Smoczyk Stadium for 15 years in the Polish Ekstraliga.Adams, who celebrated his 41st birthday on Saturday night, built his reputation on amazing track craft around the kerb. So Holder was quick to pay tribute to the 10-time Aussie champion, who is still recovering from the serious spinal damage he sustained while practicing for the Finke Desert Rally near Alice Springs last June. Holder said: "I pulled a Leigh Adams pass on them and I'm stoked. I've got to say happy birthday to Leigh. That one is for him."Reflecting on one of the most epic SGP finals in recent years, Holder said: "It was mayhem. The four of us were just in and out of each other the whole time. It's difficult when it's like that. You're trying to chase the guy in front, but you've got a guy beside you going everywhere as well. It's hard to decide whether you keep charging or consolidate your position. I pretty much did. I dropped it on AJ and thought, 'sweet, I've got the third.' When I did, I made an awesome corner on the second lap. I caught up to Jarek when Tomasz moved him really wide. That opened it up. When I chased Tomasz in the heat race, even then I had a lot of speed on him. It was just a matter of getting it perfect because Tomasz doesn't make mistakes. You've got to out-ride him a little bit."Holder went into his final heat race tied on seven points with five other riders in the battle for a semi-final berth. But the Poole-based man held his nerve and powered to victory ahead of Hans Andersen and Jonsson to qualify on 10 points. He was last in his opening outing, so he was delighted to find the consistency needed to bounce back.He added: "Going into my last race, there was a lot of pressure to make the semi because it was so difficult. This track is so good to race on, which means you can win a race and then be last in the next one. There's no guarantee that you'll be on the pace in every one. You've just got to try and be in the top two to get your points. That isn't easy, but my meeting turned out well. When the pressure was on, I performed. I needed to make my two gate ones I had count and I did. I can't ask for any more. My bike was so quick. Johnsy (tuner Peter Johns) has done an awesome job on that bike and the engine, so I've got to give him credit. We can all ride well – you need a good bike too."Holder has now won one Grand Prix every year since he made his World Championship debut in 2010. His triumph was the perfect tonic after he managed just four points in the FIM Buckley Systems New Zealand SGP in Auckland on March 31. That meeting, which took place hours after Holder's partner Sealy gave birth to their son Max, was the rider's worst SGP performance ever. But he is confident he can build on his Leszno success and find some consistency.Asked whether he believes he can add more gold medals to his collection this year, Holder said: "Of course I can. New Zealand was no good and I'm not worried about that one now. Maybe Max being born that morning did something to me subconsciously. But this one was awesome and I can't ask for much more. I was more serious in practice and it worked out."Gollob started his night with just one point from two races, but hit back with three heat wins before following Hampel home in the semi-finals and getting the better of the Lodz-born man in the medal race. He said: "I was not happy with the engine after the first couple of heats and changed the setup. Then I had a very fast engine. Congratulations to Chris and commiserations to Jarek – this is a hard sport."Hampel also showed some serious speed towards the end of the meeting, but admits he needed to show more steel in the final. He said: "In the end it was fine. My bike was fast in the last few races and I felt great on the track. I was really comfortable on the bike. At the beginning, I had some problems and couldn't go so quick. I really wanted to win. I needed to be harder on the track and I know that now."WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS: 1 Jaroslaw Hampel 33, 2 Greg Hancock 31, 3 Tomasz Gollob 31, 4 Jason Crump 24, 5 Chris Holder 23, 6 Nicki Pedersen 23, 7 Andreas Jonsson 17, 8 Antonio Lindback 17, 9 Fredrik Lindgren 16, 10 Emil Sayfutdinov 15, 11 Kenneth Bjerre 12, 12 Hans Andersen 11, 13 Peter Ljung 10, 14 Bjarne Pedersen 9, 15 Chris Harris 8, 16 Przemyslaw Pawlicki 7, 17 Jason Bunyan 1.FIM FOGO EUROPEAN SGP SCORES: 1 Chris Holder 19, 2 Tomasz Gollob 16, 3 Jaroslaw Hampel 15, 4 Andreas Jonsson 13, 5 Jason Crump 12, 6 Nicki Pedersen 10, 7 Greg Hancock 9, 8 Kenneth Bjerre 8, 9 Fredrik Lindgren 8, 10 Przemyslaw Pawlicki 7, 11 Emil Sayfutdinov 7, 12 Peter Ljung 6, 13 Hans Andersen 5, 14 Antonio Lindback 4, 15 Chris Harris 3, 16 Bjarne Pedersen 2.

FIM Academy inspires future generation of racing starsThe inaugural 2012 FIM Track Racing Youth...

FIM Academy inspires future generation of racing starsThe inaugural 2012 FIM Track Racing Youth Training Camp was organised in collaboration with Croatia's Gorican Speedway Club, which hosted the event at its city's Speedway Stadium Millennium. The FIM Track Racing Commission together with FIM Medical, Technical & International Environment Commissions, under the aegis of the FIM Academy, the training division of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme, are investing in the futures of young motorcycle racers through its newly launched annual training camps for Speedway and Long Track riders. The 2012 FIM Track Racing Youth Training Camp was held in April just before this year's FIM Speedway Youth Gold Trophy, which was also hosted in Croatia. The first-ever international training event of its kind, the two-day FIM Track Racing Youth Training Camp taught Speedway riding techniques, helping the young riders to improve their skills and inspiring them to become future champions in this spectacular discipline. Twenty-four riders, aged eleven to seventeen, benefited from the first FIM Track Racing Youth Training Camp, after being selected through their respective national youth training programmes for the sport. First-class coaching was provided over the two days by an elite group of instructors, which included the likes of Marco Belli who is Europe's most successful Flat Track rider and local Croatian speedway star, Jurica Pavlic. Greg Hancock, 2011 FIM Speedway World Champion and winner of the 2012 FIM New Zealand Speedway Grand Prix, also joined the training team as the event's appointed ambassador. Speaking after the event, Greg Hancock, commented: "Looking to the future of Speedway, it all starts with the kids or youngsters getting an early ride and with a natural progression. The introduction of the FIM Speedway Youth Project is a major step forward for the sport as I see it. Countries such as Sweden and Denmark have produced many World Champions from the favourable two-stroke 80-85cc bikes over the years, however I believe that they can do even better by allowing the early teenagers to step up to the Youth 250cc one or two years before going professional on the 500cc." Paul Bellamy, Managing Director of BSI Speedway, which promoted the event, commented: "We welcome this initiative from the FIM as the future of any sports lies with the engagement of new competitors and a new audience from a young age. This is a great start and we look forward to the roll out of these training camps across key Speedway markets globally to help underpin the future of the sport."Other instructors included Armando Castagna from Italy, Christophe Dubernard and Laurent Sambarrey from France, René Schaefer and Sönke Petersen from Germany, Phil Morris from Great Britain, Talgat Galeiev from Russia, Aki Pekka Mustonen from Finland, Vozar Lubomir from Czech Republic. Various sessions both on and off the track were provided for the young racers with the instructors sharing their vast array of knowledge and experience. The FIM agrees that nurturing young talent in this way is vital to the future of Speedway and other motorcycle sports, as FIM President, Vito Ippolito, explains: "This initiative follows the trend that the FIM is building up in each one of our sports to train and prepare young riders for success. Speedway is popular in many parts of Europe. We must now work to strengthen its international appeal and to recruit as much new talent to the sport as possible. With the support of our National Federations, our promoter IMG and the whole Track Racing community, I am convinced that we can ensure the development of Speedway and also expand the practice of this sport to new countries."The FIM plans to tour the World with its new FIM Track Racing Youth Training Camp, holding one event each year. The host nation for the 2013 FIM Track Racing Youth Training Camp will be announced in the coming months.Photos captions: Greg Hancock, 2011 FIM Speedway World Champion & the Twenty-four riders, aged eleven to seventeen.
